Local Consulting Company Spins Off a New Software Startup to Meet the Needs of a Growing Hemp Industry

OMAHA, Nebraska —Seeing a need in the $20 Billion Hemp Industry for traceability, Hemp Batch Tracker (HBT) is now ready for customers! HBT, the first spinoff of parent company, Omaha-based, Contemporary Analysis (CAN) was founded early last year to fill a need for traceability in the new Hemp Space.

The newly formed company, incubated and accelerated by the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Startup Collaborative, spent 2020 building out a beta version and testing it with farmers and processors. After receiving feedback from their customers, HBT applied for and won the Nebraska Prototyping Grant which will fund the continued development of Version 1 as well as new modules.

The idea came when they realized most solutions in the Hemp space were all retooled Cannabis tracking softwares. They didn’t work well for hemp because Cannabis tracking is about inventory control and preventing a black market. But, there is no black market in hemp. Instead, the hemp industry needs to showcase quality and meet food safety needs (FDA for example) as well as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines. HBT was built for this need and is dedicated to recall control rather than inventory control.

HBT is also the only hemp tracking software that covers hemp from genetics to end consumer with licenses for farmers, processors, laboratories, manufacturing, and state & law enforcement. With these licenses at every stage of the process, farmers are able to track the end-use of their product. “We built Hemp Batch Tracker to be data-driven from the start. As the industry adapts and changes we can make adjustments to fit the needs of our customers. This is important as Hemp is becoming more than just CBD, so we had to make sure our platform could handle whatever hemp innovation was next.” said Justin Trowbridge, Co-Founder of Hemp Batch Tracker.

One of Hemp Batch Tracker’s early customers, Dustin Krajewski founder and owner of NECO Farms in Ogallala, says, “The approach to managing the hemp cultivation and production operation through retail distribution allows us to understand the end-use of our products grown in the field and helps us achieve our goals of becoming a better and more efficient farming operation. We meet or exceed federal and state regulatory requirements through the use of our track and trace hemp production approach.”

About the parent company CAN: Founded in Omaha at the start of the 2008 economic downturn, parent company Contemporary Analysis not only helps organizations learn how to do data science through consulting and training but also helps companies understand how to turn their solutions into commercialized IP through CAN’s IP development services. HBT is the first of many planned spinoffs for the company over the next 5 years.  HBT will also be raising a seed round of investment in the Spring of 2021.
