Is Advertising Scary?

Promoting your business can be tough. You might wonder where you should start. Pay a marketing company? Use your own social media platforms? There’s a lot to consider but advertising doesn’t have to be scary. 

Take a look and see what paranormal podcasters Pat and Rebecca have to say. Their show first aired in 2018 and since then, their list of subscribers and followers has grown exponentially.

“Ghostly is a horror/history podcast that explores a new bit of folklore every two weeks. The hosts, Pat and Rebecca, one a skeptic and one a believer, tell the history of the lore and the paranormal stories surrounding it, then they debate those stories. After the episode, listeners vote on what they believe – is this story real or just folklore?”

One would think they must have spent quite a pretty penny on their marketing, but Pat and Rebecca say not quite!

They go on to mention that while they do pay for some Facebook advertising, the majority of their following comes from word of mouth and recommendations from friends. Their success and the rising fanbase is not a coincidence, however.

Pat and Rebecca mention the planning that went into Ghostly Podcast took roughly four months before they aired their first episode. In that time they cultivated the show concept, mission statement, and format that would best engage with viewers. 

They also contribute their success to the work they do with other podcasts. Both Pat and Rebecca mention that they tend to share viewers with other shows that are in the paranormal genre.

Not everything has been a bed of roses. Ghostly Podcast became involved with Podcoin, which is a rewards program for listening to podcasts for listeners and the hosts as well. Podcoins are awarded to viewers as a sense of currency while the show hosts benefit as well. Pat and Rebecca recall that their list of views skyrocketed until Podcoin’s app chose to shut down.

Ghostly Podcast retained some of their viewers and is now back on track to gain the following they had during the Podcoin experience. While the hiccup wasn’t planned, they both agree that the silver lining is that their audience feels more sincere.
